Český Krumlov

Greg and I woke up at 6am yesterday to take a train out of Prague for a day trip to Český Krumlov. This is a small town 3 hours south of Prague still in the Czech Republic. I’ve heard it before but when I got to the small town, I felt as though the train I was on was an actual time machine. Get ready for a post full of pictures… once you see them, I don’t think you’ll mind.

When we arrived, we walked through a small entrance which opened up to the beautiful, cobble-stone, majestic town. This town was constructed in 1240.. TWELVE FORTY. That is absolutely crazy to me. I know Prague was around a little before that, which is amazing too, but Český Krumlov seems to have been untouched since that time. Europe is old and I love that about it. Seeing things that were established centuries before the Americas were even a thought is mind boggling. I can still see the history in Prague, however, a lot of it is surrounded by shopping malls, tourists, and graffiti. Anyways, all I’m trying to say is Český Krumlov felt unreal, as if I was on a movie set, or in Universal Studios at Harry Potter World. Except, this place was and is real.

We started off at the Český Krumlov Castle and paid a small price (monetary and physically) to climb to the top of it’s bell tower. Another cold day in the Czech Republic, but we lucked out with SUN!! Wahooo. When we got to the top of the tower I was in awe. I’ll attach some pictures right below from the top of the Castle. No pictures from this town could do this place justice though.

After the castle, Greg and I found a little crepe shop and called some Nutella crepes our lunch for the day. (Definitely had 3 crepes in 24 hours.. I’m more than ok with that).

Yum.

We then just took the time to walk around town. It was definitely small enough to have an hour to walk around the whole place and take it all in. We had 6 hours there though so we adventured a little and enjoyed a coffee in a small cafe. The architecture was beautiful, the colors of the walls were vibrant, and the shops and restaurants were quaint. After every few steps along the main street, there were small alley ways of uneven cobble stone and shops nestled into the walls. If you are familiar with Harry Potter, the best way I can describe this place is: Diagon Alley.

One of my favorite pictures from the day. Really captures the crooked alleyway feeling with a beautiful view.

If you are ever in the Czech Republic or even Austria, I HIGHLY recommend taking a day trip to this beautiful town. My personal opinion though is that you really only need half a day here, I wouldn’t spend the money for an overnight trip.

We caught a 5 o’clock train home, which included a very hectic, 2 minute, transfer. We got to the transfer train station in the middle of the Czech Republic at 5:51, and the train to Prague left from a different platform there at 5:53. We obviously made it though, huge props to Greg’s sense of direction (because we all know I have none of that). We arrived in Prague around 8, just in time to make dinner, take a quick nap and find a place to watch the Super Bowl. 5 of us schmoozed our way into a booth at TGI Friday’s without a reservation and stayed until half time. Waking up to the result of the game last night had us kicking ourselves for not pushing through but hey it was 3 am here. At least all of you people in America had a good Super Bowl Sunday.

Well, another week is already starting and I’m still in orientation mode. Tomorrow I have a quick history lesson and a “meet the teachers” meeting. Hope all is well with whoever you are wherever you are.

xx
